How to Overcome Dry Skin Naturally

How to Overcome Dry Skin Naturally

Dry Skin Dilemma? Here’s how to get rid of Dry Skin naturally.

Dry skin happens when our skin loses too much moisture or can’t retain it properly, leaving it feeling tight, rough, or flaky. This can be caused by various factors like cold weather, low humidity, or using soaps or washes containing harsh chemicals like Sulphates (SLS) and alcohol that strip the natural oils from your skin. Even things like hot showers or age-related changes can affect the skin's ability to stay hydrated.

Dry skin is a common issue and is often just the skin’s way of telling us it needs a little extra care and attention.

How to relieve dry skin naturally

The best way to relieve dry skin is to put moisture back, and retain your skins natural oils.

  1. Limit your bath or shower to 5 - 10 minutes. When washing use warm, not hot, water to prevent stripping your skin of its natural oils, which can lead to dryness and irritation.
  2. Choose gentle, organic cleansers without SLS or alcohol. Natural cleansers with ingredients like Aloe Vera, Glycerin, and Patchouli oil help to nourish your skin and keep in moisture.
  3. Moisturise. Moisturise immediately after drying off with a natural organic rich moisturiser containing nourishing ingredients like Patchouli or Rose Geranium Oil, Aloe Vera, and Shea butter to help lock in hydration and keep your skin soft and healthy.

How can I treat dry skin on my face naturally?

  • Wash your face with a natural organic cleanser. Wet your face with warm water. Apply your cleanser and leave on for a minimum of 2 minutes before rinsing with warm (not hot) running water. For very dry skin, cleanse only once a day at night.

  • Moisturise. Apply a natural organic rich cream for dry skin while your skin is still damp.

If you feel your skin needs extra hydration, apply a pure rose water toner, wait for it to dry and follow with your moisturiser or use a natural face oil, and leave for 10 minutes before applying your moisturiser.

How can I prevent dry skin naturally?

Dry skin prevention is all about protecting your skin and keeping it hydrated.

  1. Cover up in cold weather. Wind and cold can sap moisture from your skin, so protect it with clothing like gloves.
  2. Stay hydrated. Dehydration from not drinking enough water can contribute to dry skin. Herbal teas are a great way of hydrating during cold weather.
  3. Moisturise. Moisturising with creams, face oils and Rose Water are not only a great way to relieve dry skin, they also act as a barrier to protect and help the skin retain moisture.
  4. Wear lip balm. Keep your lips moisturised to prevent chapping.

What should I avoid if I have dry skin?

There are several factors that can contribute to dry skin.

  1. Harsh Soaps and Cleansers. Products with oil stripping chemicals such as SLS, Sulphates, Alcohol or fragrances (perfume) can irritate and dry out your skin further.
  2. Rough Towels. Rubbing your skin with rough or abrasive towels can cause irritation; pat your skin dry instead.
  3. Over-Exfoliating. Excessive scrubbing can damage the skin's protective barrier and cause more dryness.
  4. High-Heat Indoor Environments. Prolonged exposure to heaters or fires can dry the air and your skin.
  5. Dietary Triggers: Reduce caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods, which can dehydrate the skin.
  6. Chlorine is an irritant that can strip the skin of its natural oils, causing it to feel dry and itchy. Limit your exposure if you have dry or itchy skin.
  7. Smoking. Avoid nicotine, which dries out the skin.

Concluding advice

Dry skin can be uncomfortable, but with the right natural remedies and preventive measures, you can restore your skin’s hydration and keep it healthy and soft.

By giving your skin the care it deserves, you’ll not only relieve dry skin but also support its long-term health and radiance. Start incorporating these natural tips today, and let your skin thank you tomorrow!

How to clear acne naturally at home

How to clear acne naturally at home

Acne can really take a toll on your mental health, especially as it impacts how you feel about your appearance and self-esteem. This can lead to stress, which may actually cause more breakouts. You may have tried conventional acne treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or niacinamide but these can be expensive and have undesirable side effects, like dryness, redness, and irritation. It’s tough dealing with these challenges. But you’re not alone, and there are very effective ways to clear acne naturally and prevent further breakouts.

In this blog we will cover:

What is acne?

What causes acne?

How to clear acne naturally at home?

What causes hormonal acne?

How to clear hormonal acne?

How long does acne last?

How to prevent acne?

What is acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles or pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Acne is something most people experience at some point in their lives, particularly during adolescence when sebaceous glands become more active and produce excess oil. While it mostly affects teenagers, it can occur at any age.

What causes acne?

Acne can be caused by a combination of factors, including excess oil (sebum) production, clogged hair follicles or pores, bacteria, inflammation and hormonal changes. When dead skin cells and oil block hair follicles, bacteria can grow, leading to inflammation and the formation of pimples, blackheads, or cysts.

Other factors that may contribute to the development of acne include:

  • Genetics
  • Stress
  • Certain medications
  • Diet

Different types of acne

The main types of acne include:

Comedonal acne, characterised by non-inflammatory lesions such as whiteheads and blackheads, which form when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells.

Inflammatory acne includes papules and pustules, which are red, swollen bumps that may contain pus.

Cystic acne is a severe form that results in large, painful nodules beneath the skin, often leading to scarring.

Understanding these different types of acne can help in selecting the appropriate treatment and skincare routine.

How to clear acne naturally at home?

Tea tree essential oil is one of the best natural remedies for acne due to its powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to kill acne-causing bacteria and reduce the redness and swelling associated with pimples. Unlike harsher synthetic treatments, tea tree oil is gentler on the skin, making it a popular choice for those seeking a natural solution. When used properly, it can help clear up breakouts, prevent future blemishes, and promote a clearer complexion without causing excessive dryness or irritation.

Here's how you can use Tea Tree to treat your acne at home:

1. Wash your skin twice a day with a natural organic tea tree soap or wash. Wet your skin, apply the soap directly on your skin and leave it for 2 minutes, then rinse and pat your skin dry with a towel. Don't rub your skin as this can cause irritation. Rinse off your soap and leave it to drain.

2. If your skin feels dry use an Aloe Vera based tea tree cream. Start by using it every other day and increase or decrease if you need to. Known for its soothing, moisturising, and healing properties, Aloe Vera is commonly used as a natural remedy to soothe inflammation.

Maintaining proper skin hydration is important. When the skin becomes dry, it compensates by producing more oil, which can lead to excess sebum, clogged pores and increased acne spots.

3. For individual spots or pimples you can spot treat with neat tea tree essential oil. Apply a drop directly to each blemish, pimple or bump using a cotton swab once or twice daily.

4. Exfoliate once or twice a week. Exfoliating is important for acne-prone skin because it helps remove dead skin cells that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Exfoliation promotes cell turnover, allowing fresh, healthy skin to surface and reducing the likelihood of acne. Additionally, it can help to clear away excess oil and debris, minimising inflammation and preventing future blemishes. However, it’s essential to choose gentle exfoliants to avoid irritating the skin, as harsh scrubs can worsen acne and cause more redness.

What causes hormonal acne?

Hormonal acne is caused by fluctuations in hormones, especially androgens like testosterone, which can increase sebum (oil) production and clog pores. These fluctuations often occur during puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, menopause, or due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Stress and certain medications can also trigger hormonal changes, leading to breakouts, typically around the chin, jawline, and lower cheeks.

How to clear hormonal acne?

Rose Geranium essential oil can help manage hormonal acne due to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and balancing properties. It regulates sebum production, which reduces clogged pores, and its soothing qualities calm redness and irritation. Follow the same steps as above but use Rose Geranium Soap or Wash and Rose Geranium Light Cream. Rose Geranium oil can't be used direct on the skin. For individual spots or pimples you can spot treat with neat tea tree essential oil as above.  Regular use of Rose Geranium products can promote clearer skin by supporting hormonal balance and reducing acne-causing bacteria.

Other things you can do to help manage your acne:

Eat Oily Fish

Eating fish, particularly those rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, mackerel, and sardines, can help with acne. Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce skin inflammation and prevent acne breakouts. These healthy fats also support skin health by regulating oil production and keeping the skin hydrated. While eating fish alone won't cure acne, incorporating it into a balanced diet can improve skin condition and complement other acne treatments.

Other plant-based foods that contain Omega-3 fatty acids:

  • Flaxseeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Walnuts

Some vegetable oils, like olive oil, flaxseed oil and canola oil, contain small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.

Cut back on dairy

Cutting back on dairy may help reduce acne, as some studies suggest that dairy products can stimulate oil production and trigger hormonal changes that contribute to breakouts.

Reduce stress

When you're stressed, your body produces cortisol, a hormone that can exacerbate acne by stimulating sebaceous glands and causing breakouts. Additionally, stress can lead to unhealthy habits like touching your face, neglecting your skincare routine, or opting for unhealthy foods, all of which can worsen acne. By implementing stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, exercise, or hobbies, you can help keep your skin clearer and support your overall well-being.

Exercise regularly

Regular exercise can benefit acne-prone skin by improving circulation, reducing stress, and promoting the release of toxins through sweat, which can help keep pores clear and skin healthy. It's important to wash your skin as soon as possible after exercise if you have acne, as sweat and bacteria can clog pores and lead to breakouts if left on the skin for too long.

How long does acne last?

Typically, acne pimples take about one to two weeks to resolve on their own. However, with the right skincare routine, you can accelerate your body’s healing process and reduce the duration of acne. In cases of severe acne, it may take several weeks for improvement to occur, even with treatment.

How to prevent acne?

Although there’s no guaranteed method to eliminate acne permanently, you can adopt certain habits in to your routine to help reduce breakouts. Here are some suggestions:

  • Maintain a consistent skincare routine morning and night
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Keep your skin hydrated to minimise excess oil and clogged pores.
  • Limit makeup as wearing heavy makeup can clog pores and lead to breakouts. If you choose to wear makeup, opt for non-comedogenic and fragrance-free products to minimise skin irritation. Always ensure you thoroughly remove makeup, especially before going to bed.
  • Avoid popping, picking or squeezing your acne. Doing so can lead to bleeding, significant scarring, or infection. It may also worsen inflammation and clog nearby pores, exacerbating your acne issue.

By being mindful of these things, you can take proactive steps towards achieving a healthier complexion.

How to get rid of Scalp Acne?

How to get rid of Scalp Acne?

Scalp acne can be both painful and frustrating. Unlike acne on other parts of the body, scalp acne is hidden under your hair making it harder to reach and treat. But choosing the right natural products can help get rid of your acne and keep it from reoccurring.

In this blog we will look at:

What causes scalp acne?

How to get rid of scalp acne?

Can hair products cause scalp acne?

Can scalp acne cause hair loss?

How long does it take to clear scalp acne?

How to prevent scalp acne reoccurring.

What causes Scalp Acne?

Scalp acne is typically caused by a combination of clogged pores, excess oil production, and bacteria. The scalp naturally produces oils to keep skin and hair healthy, but when these oils combine with dead skin cells, sweat, and hair products, they can clog hair follicles and create an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. This build-up can lead to inflamed pimples or cysts on the scalp.

Additional factors:

  • Stress
  • Not washing the hair thoroughly enough with the right natural sulphate free products
  • Waiting too long after intensive exercise to wash the hair
  • Certain medications
  • Wearing hats or helmets that trap sweat and oil

Understanding these triggers can help in finding ways to prevent and manage scalp breakouts.

How to get rid of Scalp Acne?

To effectively treat scalp acne, it's essential to keep your pores clear, so maintaining a clean scalp is important.

Wash your hair regularly and thoroughly with a natural, sulphate-free, antibacterial shampoo like Tea Tree or Patchouli. These contain ingredients that gently cleanse the scalp, removing excess oil, and preventing bacterial build-up without causing irritation.

Scalp Acne Pack

How to wash your hair thoroughly with a natural shampoo:

1. Wet hair and apply shampoo.

2. Massage slowly with fingertips, thoroughly working the gel into the scalp (without scratching the scalp) for about 2 minutes. Lather is not important to the cleansing process but working the gel right into the scalp is important.

3. Rinse thoroughly, still massaging with fingertips and repeat the process.

4. Gently towel dry and leave to completely dry naturally if possible (especially if you have an itchy/dry scalp or damaged hair)

If you have dry hair/scalp, use a natural antibacterial hair conditioner.

Can hair products cause Scalp Acne?

Some shampoos and hair products can cause scalp acne by clogging hair follicles. This happens when hair products leave residue on the scalp or contain ingredients that dry out or irritate the skin.

Key ingredients to avoid include:

  • Sulphates - These can strip the scalp of natural oils, leading to dryness and potential overproduction of oil as a rebound effect.
  • Silicones - Can create build-up on the scalp, clogging hair follicles and trapping oil and dead skin.
  • Artificial Fragrances and Dyes - May cause irritation or allergic reactions on sensitive scalps.
  • Heavy Waxes - Often found in styling products, these can create a layer of residue on the scalp, blocking follicles and trapping oil and dead skin cells.
  • Alcohols - These can be drying and irritating, leading to inflammation and possible acne flare-ups.

Can Scalp Acne cause hair loss?

Scalp acne can sometimes contribute to hair loss, particularly if it becomes severe or is left untreated. Acne on the scalp can inflame hair follicles, potentially leading to a condition called folliculitis, where the hair follicles become infected. Chronic inflammation or infection may weaken the hair shaft or damage the follicle, causing hair to fall out. Additionally, excessive scratching or picking at scalp acne can further irritate the area and exacerbate hair loss. Prompt treatment and proper scalp care can help manage acne and reduce the risk of hair loss.

How long does it take to clear Scalp Acne?

Clearing scalp acne can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may start to improve within two to four weeks with consistent use of gentle, natural antibacterial or anti-inflammatory treatments like tea tree oil products. For more severe or cystic forms of scalp acne, it may take longer.

How to prevent Scalp Acne reoccurring

  • Wash your hair regularly with a natural sulphate free shampoo.
  • Stop using stay in hair products.
  • Avoid head coverings.
  • Wash your hair as soon as possible after exercise.

Consistency is key, as disrupting a routine or using harsh products can set back progress. It’s also important to maintain a balanced diet and manage stress, as these factors can influence how quickly acne clears.

Are natural toothpastes effective

Are natural toothpastes effective

In recent years, the growing trend toward natural products has touched nearly every aspect of our daily lives, including how we care for our teeth. With an ever-expanding range of natural toothpastes on the market, it's only natural to wonder whether these alternatives really work, and are they better for us than conventional toothpastes?

My journey with Natural Toothpaste began when I struggled with severely sensitive teeth. I followed my dentist's advice and tried a well known toothpaste for sensitive teeth but my discomfort only worsened. It wasn't until a friend suggested I try a natural toothpaste that I experienced real relief - within just a few days, my sensitivity had completely gone. At my recent dental check-up I was delighted when my dentist said 'Your teeth have remineralised, see you next year!'

Let's take a look at natural toothpaste and explore why it might be the best addition to your oral care.

Does natural toothpaste work?

Why avoid fluoride toothpaste?

Is natural toothpaste better for you?

Is natural toothpaste good for sensitive teeth?

5 benefits of natural toothpaste

How to know toothpaste is natural?

Does Natural Toothpaste Work?

The short answer is Yes, natural toothpaste can be just as effective (in my case, more effective) as conventional toothpaste in maintaining oral health. Natural toothpastes are designed to clean your teeth, freshen your breath, and protect your gums using ingredients derived from nature. The key is in the ingredients. For instance, calcium carbonate serves as a gentle abrasive that helps remove plaque and stains without damaging your enamel. Xylitol, a natural sweetener, is known to reduce cavities by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria. Neem oil has antibacterial properties that help fight off gum disease, while Aloe Vera soothes and heals gums.

Using natural toothpaste can also help remineralise/strengthen the enamel of your teeth and even reverse tooth decay. I experienced this first hand. When a natural toothpaste contains ingredients like calcium carbonate, it can rebuild and strengthen enamel by replenishing the minerals lost to decay. This has not only prevented further damage but actually repaired my teeth, restoring them to a healthy state.

Why Avoid Fluoride Toothpaste?

When used regularly, natural toothpastes can keep your teeth clean and your mouth healthy, much like conventional products. However, it’s important to note that natural toothpastes usually don't contain fluoride, which is known for its role in preventing cavities. Instead, they rely on other ingredients to offer similar protective benefits.

While fluoride is effective at preventing cavities, there are some concerns about its overuse. Excessive fluoride can lead to dental fluorosis, a condition that causes discoloration of the teeth. There’s also ongoing debate about the potential long-term health effects of fluoride, with some people choosing to avoid it as a precaution. Natural toothpastes, which are typically fluoride-free, offer an alternative for those who are looking to minimise their fluoride exposure while still maintaining good oral hygiene.

Is Natural Toothpaste Better for You?

Like me, many people believe that natural toothpaste is better for you, especially if you're looking to reduce your exposure to synthetic chemicals. The issue with traditional toothpastes is that many formulas contain harmful synthetic chemicals and even plastic.

Consider these alarming ingredients:

  • Triclosan - A chemical antibacterial agent commonly found in toothpaste and personal care products. Has been linked to thyroid function disruption and antibiotic resistance. It disrupts growth hormones in marine animals.
  • SLS (sulphates) - Can cause mouth ulcers, drying of the mouth, and an imbalance of the bacteria in your mouth which can lead to bad breath.
  • Microbeads (microplastics) - Used in some toothpaste to remove stains and polish teeth. Each time you brush, these substances get washed down the drain into lakes and oceans. When ingested by marine animals, microbeads not only harm wildlife but can also make their way back to us through seafood!

Natural toothpaste is typically free from artificial flavours, colours, and preservatives, making it a healthier choice. It’s also a great option for those who prefer to use products with ingredients they can easily recognise and understand.

Natural ingredients like peppermint oil, clove oil, and eucalyptus oil not only provide fresh breath but also offer antimicrobial benefits, supporting overall oral health in a more holistic way.

Is natural toothpaste good for sensitive teeth?

Natural toothpaste can be very beneficial for sensitive teeth, especially when formulated with ingredients that offer pain relief and protection. For instance, Truthpaste is a natural toothpaste inspired by a toothache, designed specifically to address sensitivity. Its unique formula includes organic oils with analgesic properties, which help to soothe and alleviate the discomfort associated with sensitive teeth.

5 Benefits of Natural Toothpaste

  1. Gentle on Sensitive Teeth: Natural toothpaste often contains ingredients like aloe vera and calcium carbonate that are less abrasive, making it a great choice for those with sensitive teeth or gums.

  2. Chemical-Free Freshness: Essential oils like peppermint, wintergreen, and clove not only freshen breath but also provide natural antibacterial properties, reducing the need for synthetic chemicals.

  3. Reduces Risk of Allergies: Without artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives, natural toothpaste is less likely to cause allergic reactions, making it a safer choice for many people.

  4. Supports Overall Health: By avoiding harsh chemicals and synthetic additives, natural toothpaste aligns with a more holistic approach to health, supporting not just your oral health but your overall well-being.

  5. Environmentally Friendly: Many natural toothpaste brands are committed to using eco-friendly packaging and sustainable ingredients, making them a better choice for the planet as well as your body. If you're striving for a 100%-eco oral care routine, try a Bamboo toothbrush!

Natural Toothpaste

How to Know Toothpaste is Natural?

To ensure that your toothpaste is truly natural, check the ingredients list. Look for familiar, plant-based ingredients like aloe vera, peppermint oil, neem oil, and clove oil. Avoid products that list artificial preservatives, colours, or synthetic chemicals. Certifications from organisations like the Natural Products Association (NPA) or USDA Organic can also provide assurance that the toothpaste meets certain natural and organic standards.

Natural toothpaste is an effective and healthier option for maintaining your oral health. With the right combination of natural ingredients, you can enjoy a clean, fresh mouth without the concerns associated with synthetic additives.

How to avoid and stop Athlete's Foot

How to avoid and stop Athlete's Foot

Athlete's foot, a common fungal infection affecting the skin on the feet, can be both uncomfortable and persistent. The good news is, there are numerous ways to tackle athlete's foot naturally!

Natural remedies can be very effective in treating athlete’s foot. By incorporating a few simple, yet effective strategies into your daily routine, you can not only combat the infection but also maintain healthier, happier feet.

In this blog we will cover:

How athlete's foot is caused?

How do you know if you have athlete's foot?

What can you use for athlete's foot?

How to avoid athlete's foot?

What causes athlete's foot?

Athlete's foot, medically known as tinea pedis, is primarily caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. These fungi thrive in warm, moist environments such as changing rooms, public showers, and around swimming pools, making it easy to contract the infection in these settings. The fungi can invade the outer layer of the skin through small cracks or abrasions, often resulting from sweaty feet confined in tight, non-breathable footwear. Factors such as poor foot hygiene, wearing damp socks, and having a compromised immune system can also increase susceptibility to athlete's foot.

How do you know if you have athlete's foot?

Identifying athlete's foot involves recognising several telltale symptoms. Common signs include persistent itching, stinging, and burning sensations between the toes or on the soles of the feet. The skin may appear red, scaly, and dry, sometimes developing cracks or blisters that can be painful. In more severe cases, skin damaged by athlete's foot can become infected with bacteria which can lead to cellulitis, causing the skin to become red, hot and swollen. If you notice any of these symptoms, particularly after spending time in damp environments like changing rooms or swimming pools, it is likely you have athlete's foot and should start appropriate treatment.

What can you use for athlete's foot?

Natural remedies can be an effective way to treat athlete's foot while avoiding the side effects of harsh chemicals. Start by washing the affected area with Organic Tea Tree Oil Soap, which has potent antifungal properties. Follow up by applying an Organic Tea Tree Oil Cream directly to the infected skin to soothe irritation and combat the fungus. Tea tree oil's natural antiseptic qualities help reduce inflammation and promote healing. Consistent use of these natural treatments can not only soothe the itching and discomfort of athlete's foot but also help prevent the infection from returning.

How to avoid athlete's foot?

Managing a fungal foot infection, such as athlete's foot, involves diligent self-care to alleviate symptoms and prevent recurrence.

  • Keep your feet clean and dry, washing them daily with natural Tea Tree Oil Soap and water and thoroughly drying them, especially between the toes.
  • Apply Organic Tea Tree Cream after cleansing.
  • Opt for breathable, moisture-wicking socks and change them frequently if your feet get sweaty.
  • Choose well-ventilated shoes and avoid walking barefoot in public areas.
  • Avoid sharing footwear or towels with others.

Consistent and mindful foot hygiene is key to managing and preventing fungal infections.

What is the correct way to shower?

What is the correct way to shower?

When it comes to our daily hygiene routine, showering seems like a straightforward task. But did you know that you might be doing it wrong?

The temperature of your water and the products you use can have a significant impact on the health of your skin and hair. In this blog we will look at:

The Downside to showering in hot water

The problems harsh shower gels can cause

Can shower gel be used as shampoo?

Is it wrong to take a shower every day?

How to take a shower correctly?

Are cold showers good for your hair?

The Downside to showering in hot water

There's nothing quite like a steamy hot shower to wake you up in the morning or unwind after a long day. However, as comforting as it may feel, hot water can actually strip your skin of its natural oils. These oils play a crucial role in maintaining skin hydration and protecting against external irritants. When you expose your skin to hot water on a regular basis, it can lead to dryness, irritation, and even exacerbate conditions like eczema.

The problems harsh shower gels can cause

Many commercial soaps and body washes are formulated with harsh detergents and fragrances. While they may leave you feeling squeaky clean, they can also disrupt the delicate balance of your skin and strip away its natural protective barrier. This can leave your skin feeling dry, itchy, and prone to irritation. Additionally, the fragrance/perfume ingredients commonly found in these products can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Opting for a natural organic cleanser offers numerous benefits:

  • They gently cleanse without stripping away essential skin oils, maintaining the skin's natural pH balance and in doing so, keeping it soft, comfortable and healthy.
  • They are far less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.
  • Natural cleansers are enriched with ingredients that not only nourish but soothe and hydrate the skin, promoting overall skin health and a more radiant complexion.
  • They are more eco and animal friendly.

Can shower gel be used as shampoo?

Using shower gel as shampoo is normally not recommended due to the differing formulations intended for skin and hair care. Shower gels often contain harsh chemicals that can strip the natural oils from your hair, leading to dryness and potential damage. In contrast, our natural organic shampoo & gel wash is specially formulated to be gentle on both skin and hair. It has no harsh chemicals, instead utilising nourishing ingredients that cleanse and condition without stripping away essential moisture. This makes it a safer and more effective option for maintaining healthy, well-moisturised hair and scalp.

Is it wrong to take a shower every day?

Taking a shower every day is not inherently wrong, but its impact can vary based on individual skin types, lifestyles, environmental factors and the products you use. For some people, daily showers help maintain personal hygiene, especially if you engage in activities that cause sweating or exposure to dirt. However, frequent showering with harsh commercial wash products can strip the skin of natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation, particularly for those with sensitive skin. Using mild, naturally moisturising products and adjusting the frequency of showers to suit your skin's needs can help mitigate any potential negative effects. Ultimately, it's about finding a balance that keeps you clean without compromising your skin's health.

How to take a shower correctly?

  • Use lukewarm water instead of hot.
  • Choose a natural organic cleanser.
  • Limit your time in the shower to prevent over-drying the skin.
  • Pat your skin dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing vigorously.
  • Follow up with a natural organic moisturiser to lock in hydration.

Are cold showers good for your hair?

Cold showers can be beneficial for your hair in several ways. Cold water helps to seal the hair cuticle, which can result in smoother, shinier hair by reducing frizz and promoting a sleek appearance. Additionally, cold water can help preserve the natural oils on your scalp and hair, preventing excessive dryness and brittleness. It also stimulates blood circulation in the scalp, which can promote healthier hair growth. Lemongrass Essential Oil Benefits for Skin and Hair

Lemongrass Essential Oil Benefits for Skin and Hair

Few things smell as refreshing as the aroma of lemongrass, but did you know that organic lemongrass essential oil holds remarkable benefits for your skin and hair too?

Lemongrass is a tall, perennial grass native to tropical regions, prized for its distinct citrusy fragrance. Its essential oil is extracted from the leaves and used in perfumes, soaps, and other beauty products for its refreshing scent and skin and hair enhancing properties.

In this blog we will discuss all the amazing reasons why you should use lemongrass in your skin and hair care routine:

  • What is lemongrass?
  • What does lemongrass do for your skin?
  • Can you apply lemongrass essential oil directly to skin?
  • What are the benefits of lemongrass oil for your hair?
  • Can I use lemongrass oil every day?

What is Lemongrass?

Lemongrass, with its vibrant and citrusy aroma, is a herbaceous plant renowned for its culinary and medicinal uses. Native to tropical regions like Southeast Asia, its essential oils are prized for their aromatic qualities and are often used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and alleviate stress. Beyond its culinary and therapeutic benefits, lemongrass is also valued for its antimicrobial properties and is commonly used in skin and hair care products to reduce irritation and inflammation.

What does Lemongrass do for your skin?

Organic Lemongrass essential oil offers several benefits for the skin, thanks to its remarkable properties:

Oil Control: Lemongrass helps regulate oil production in the skin, making it beneficial for those with Oily or Combination skin types. By balancing oil production, lemongrass can help prevent clogged pores.

Helps with breakouts: Lemongrass contains compounds like citral and limonene, which have antibacterial and antifungal properties. This makes lemongrass oil beneficial for combating acne-causing bacteria and fungal infections on the skin.

Rosacea, Thread/Spider Veins and Redness: The anti-inflammatory properties of lemongrass can help soothe irritated skin and reduce the redness and swelling associated with conditions like Rosacea.

Helps minimise Blackheads and large / open pores: Due to its astringent properties, lemongrass can help tone and tighten the skin, unblocking pores, getting rid of Blackheads and reducing the appearance of large pores and giving the skin a firmer, more youthful appearance.

Whether used as an ingredient in cleansers, moisturisers or diluted in a carrier oil, with regular use, its natural healing, soothing properties can help keep your skin soft and glowing with health.

Lemongarss soap

Can you apply Lemongrass essential oil directly to skin?

Lemongrass oil is potent and can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Therefore, it's advisable to dilute lemongrass oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil, before applying it topically. Better still, choose a safety certified natural organic product made with lemongrass essential oil. Then you can be certain the dilution is correct which reduces the risk of skin irritation while still allowing you to enjoy the benefits of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before widespread use to ensure you don't experience any adverse reactions.

Lemongrass shampoo

What are the benefits of Lemongrass oil for your Hair?

Lemongrass offers several benefits for hair and scalp health, making it a popular ingredient in hair care products. Its natural properties can help promote stronger, healthier hair and scalp in the following ways:

Controls Oil Production: Lemongrass helps regulate the production of oil on the scalp, making it beneficial for those with Greasy Hair. It helps maintain a balanced scalp environment, reducing greasiness and promoting cleaner, fresher hair.

Adds Shine: Lemongrass oil can impart a natural shine and lustre to your hair due to it's astringent properties.

Strengthens Hair: The vitamins and minerals in lemongrass nourish the scalp and hair strands, helping to strengthen them and reduce breakage, leading to smoother and more manageable hair.

Whether used as an ingredient in shampoos and conditioners or applied as a diluted essential oil directly to the scalp, lemongrass can be a valuable addition to your hair care routine, offering a range of benefits for healthier, more beautiful hair.

Lemongrass Shampoo

Can I use Lemongrass oil every day?

Yes! Incorporating lemongrass oil into your daily skincare and haircare routine can yield numerous health and beauty benefits. Used regularly, lemongrass skin and hair care products can invigorate your routine, leaving you with refreshed, skin and vibrant hair effortlessly.

It's like your skin decided to throw a tiny rebellion, leaving you feeling frustrated and, let's face it, a tad self-conscious. But there's good news!

Amidst the overwhelming array of skincare products making lofty promises, a natural solution is emerging as a standout. It's time to move away from harsh chemicals and expensive treatments, and embrace a gentle, natural, and more effective alternative.

In this blog we will cover:

  • What is Keratosis Pilaris?
  • What are the symptoms of KP?
  • How to get rid of Keratosis Pilaris naturally?
  • What are the best natural products for Keratosis Pilaris?
  • Tips for using natural tea tree products to treat KP

What is Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis Pilaris, can present itself as a formidable challenge, often stemming from a combination of genetic predisposition, dry skin, and a buildup of keratin. This perfect storm manifests as those tiny, rough bumps that seem to pop up uninvited. Beyond the physical discomfort, KP can take a toll on your self-esteem and overall quality of life. Constantly worrying about the appearance of your skin can chip away at confidence and make simple tasks, like choosing what to wear, feel like a daunting challenge. That's why finding suitable treatment options is crucial, not just for smoother skin, but for reclaiming that sense of comfort and confidence in your own skin.

Keratosis Pilaris Symptoms

What are the symptoms of KP?

Understanding the symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris is crucial for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of this common skin condition. KP manifests as small, rough bumps on the skin, typically on the arms, Legs, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes on the face. These bumps may be flesh-coloured, red, or brown, and they often have a rough texture resembling sandpaper. KP can also cause itchiness, especially in dry conditions or during winter months. In some cases, the affected areas may become inflamed, leading to redness and irritation. While KP is usually harmless and asymptomatic, the appearance of the bumps can cause self-consciousness and discomfort for those affected.

How to get rid of Keratosis Pilaris naturally?

Tea tree essential oil is a powerful natural remedy for Keratosis Pilaris boasting antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and exfoliating prowess. This botanical powerhouse isn't just a trendy addition to your skincare routine, it's a game-changer for tackling KP. Its antimicrobial properties work wonders in combating bacteria lurking within the skin's pores, while its anti-inflammatory nature calms irritation and reduces redness, providing much-needed relief for those frustrating bumps. Moreover, tea tree oil's gentle exfoliating action helps slough off dead skin cells, unclogging pores and smoothing the skin's surface, making it an enticing prospect for anyone seeking an effective treatment for KP.

What are the best natural products for Keratosis Pilaris?

Organic Tea Tree Soap with Poppy Seeds: A Gentle Cleansing Solution:

Organic tea tree soap offers a myriad of benefits for individuals dealing with Keratosis Pilaris. This is due to its gentle yet effective cleansing and exfoliating properties. Unlike harsher soaps that can strip away natural oils and exacerbate KP symptoms, tea tree soap delicately cleanses the skin without causing excessive dryness or irritation. The antibacterial properties inherent in tea tree essential oil play a pivotal role in managing KP by preventing infections and soothing inflamed bumps. Additionally, the inclusion of poppy seeds in the soap formula provides gentle exfoliation, helping to slough off dead skin cells and unclog pores. Also, regular use of tea tree soap can help reduce the redness and discomfort associated with KP promoting smoother healthier skin over time.

For optimal results incorporate tea tree soap into your daily skincare routine. Use it once a day during their daily shower or bath, gently massaging the soap onto damp skin, paying particular attention to areas affected by KP.

Organic Tea Tree Cream: Nourishing and Hydrating:

Introducing organic tea tree cream as a moisturising solution for Keratosis Pilaris (KP) offers a holistic approach to managing this common skin condition. Enriched with tea tree essential oil and other nourishing ingredients like aloe vera and shea butter, this cream provides essential hydration to the skin while simultaneously harnessing the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil. By deeply moisturising the skin, tea tree cream helps to reduce dryness and alleviate the rough patches associated with KP, leaving the skin feeling smoother and more supple. Incorporating tea tree cream into a daily skincare routine, especially after showering or bathing when the skin is most receptive to the hydrating and nourishing ingredients, can yield noticeable improvements in KP over time.

Tips for using natural tea tree products to treat KP:

          • Before incorporating any new products into your skincare routine, it's important to conduct a 24 hour patch test to ensure compatibility with your unique skin and minimise the risk of potential irritation or allergic reactions.
          • When cleansing, it's advisable to use warm water rather than hot water, as hot water can cause further irritation to the skin, especially for conditions like Keratosis Pilaris.
          • Moisturise regularly, avoiding harsh exfoliants, to protect the skin from harsh weather conditions.
          • Consistency is key when using tea tree products to manage KP symptoms, as regular application can help maintain skin health and minimise flare-ups.
          •  This is not a quick fix and it may take a little time to see noticeable improvements in KP symptoms.

How to exfoliate at home naturally

How to exfoliate at home naturally

In the pursuit of glowing, healthy skin, the importance of natural exfoliation can not be overstated. Unlike harsh chemical exfoliants that can sometimes do more harm than good, natural exfoliating methods offer a gentle yet effective way to rejuvenate the skin on your face and body. Natural exfoliants not only reveal a smoother, brighter skin but also promote better skin health in the long run.

In this blog we will cover:

          • What is exfoliating?
          • Why is skin exfoliation important?
          • When should you exfoliate?
          • How often should you exfoliate your skin?
          • What is the healthiest way to exfoliate your skin?
          • How to exfoliate at home naturally?
          • Should I moisturise after exfoliating?
          • How to exfoliate: dos and don’ts

          What is exfoliating?

Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, unveiling a fresher, smoother, healthier skin underneath. Exfoliating has ancient roots, dating back centuries to various cultures around the world. Historically, people used natural ingredients like crushed seeds, grains, or abrasive substances such as sand or pumice to slough away dead skin cells.

          Why is skin exfoliation important?

By removing dead skin cells from the surface, exfoliation helps to unclog pores, prevent breakouts, and improve the absorption of skincare products. It also promotes cell turnover, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone over time. Additionally, exfoliation can stimulate blood circulation, resulting in a more rejuvenated and revitalised complexion. Incorporating exfoliation into your skincare routine is a simple yet effective way to achieve clearer, brighter, and healthier skin.

          When should you exfoliate?

Exfoliating is best incorporated into a morning or evening routine. It should be done after cleansing but before applying oils, moisturisers or other skincare products.

How often should you exfoliate your skin?

Exfoliating is wonderful for your skin, but finding the right frequency is key. Typically, experts recommend exfoliating 2-3 times a week for most skin types. However, it's important to listen to your skin and adjust accordingly. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to exfoliate less frequently, while oily or acne-prone skin might benefit from more frequent exfoliation. Ultimately, the goal is to achieve a balance that leaves your skin smooth and glowing without causing irritation or over-exfoliation.

What is the healthiest way to exfoliate your skin?

The healthiest way to exfoliate your skin involves gentle methods that effectively remove dead skin cells without causing irritation or damage. Opting for a physical exfoliate, such as an exfoliating pad or a natural exfoliating organic soap with oatmeal, coffee or poppy seeds added, is a great choice as it provides gentle manual exfoliation. These scrubs help to slough away dead skin cells while also promoting circulation, leaving your skin soft and smooth.

Unlike harsh chemical exfoliators, which can sometimes strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt the skin barrier, gentle scrub soaps offer a safer and more natural approach to exfoliation. However, it's essential to use them with care, applying gentle pressure and avoiding over-exfoliation, especially if you have sensitive skin.

How to exfoliate at home naturally?

          Using a Scrubbie pad:

          1. Wash with a natural cleanser.

          2. Dampen your Scrubbie; your skin should be damp but not overly soaked.

          3. Utilise upward and downward strokes to exfoliate your skin.

          4. Rinse your skin (and the Scrubbie pad) thoroughly and gently pat dry with a clean towel to reveal a radiant glow.

          Exfoliating Pad

          Using an Exfoliating Soap:

          1. Wash hands first.

          2. Splash skin with warm water.

          3. Apply bar directly all over face with gentle circular movements.

          4. Rinse soap bar and leave to drain.

          5. Massage gently onto skin and leave for at least 2 mins.

          6. Rinse with warm clean running water.

          7. Close pores with a few splashes of cool water.

          8. Gently pat dry with a clean towel.

          Should I moisturise after exfoliating?

Absolutely! Moisturising after exfoliating is essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier and maximising the benefits of exfoliation. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, leaving the skin's surface smoother and more receptive to hydration. Moisturiser helps to replenish lost moisture, soothe any potential irritation, and lock in hydration, keeping the skin soft, supple, and nourished. Choosing a moisturiser with hydrating ingredients like Aloe Vera, Shea butter and Rosehip Oil can further enhance the skin's moisture levels, leaving you with a beautifully hydrated and glowing complexion. So, don't forget to moisturise after exfoliating to keep your skin looking and feeling its best!

How to exfoliate: dos and don’ts

Do: Choose a natural exfoliate. Harsh chemicals can damage your skin and cause irritation.

Don't: Rub too hard. It can cause irritation, leaving your skin red and sore.

Do: Let your skin determine how often you exfoliate. For those with sensitive skin, reducing the frequency of exfoliation may be advisable, whereas individuals with oily or acne-prone skin could find more frequent exfoliation beneficial.

Don't: Exfoliate if your skin is irritated or sun burnt. Let your skin heal before scrubbing it to avoid damaging it further.

Understanding Skin Changes in Your 40s

In our forties, our skin undergoes a series of physiological changes that can significantly impact its appearance and texture. One of the most notable changes is a decrease in collagen production, the protein responsible for maintaining skin's firmness and elasticity. This decline leads to a loss of skin elasticity, resulting in the formation of wrinkles and fine lines.

Additionally, hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women approaching menopause, can contribute to changes in skin texture and tone. These hormonal shifts may lead to increased dryness, as well as a decrease in oil production, leaving the skin feeling parched and dull.

As we age, our skin's ability to retain moisture diminishes, leading to increased dryness and a compromised skin barrier function. This can result in a rough, flaky texture and an overall lack of radiance.

Furthermore, environmental factors such as sun exposure and pollution can exacerbate these changes, accelerating the aging process and causing further damage to the skin.

Overall, understanding these physiological changes is essential for developing an effective skincare routine tailored to the specific needs of mature skin. By addressing these concerns with targeted treatments and lifestyle modifications, we can help maintain the health and vitality of our skin well into our forties and beyond.

Essential Skincare Tips for Your 40s

          Hydration Is Key!

Hydration is essential for skincare in your forties as it helps combat the increased dryness that often accompanies this stage of life. Adequate hydration not only helps replenish lost moisture but also supports skin elasticity, minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

          Daily Skincare Routine

A simple morning and evening skincare routine for your 40s can make a world of difference in maintaining healthy, radiant skin. It doesn't have to be complicated, simply having one is the cornerstone of effective skincare, ensuring that you give your skin the attention and care it deserves to age gracefully and maintain its natural glow.

AM skincare routine in your 40s:

          1. Cleanse

Starting your morning with by cleansing is a rejuvenating ritual that sets the tone for the day, especially for skin in the 40s. Cleansing not only removes impurities, but also prepares the skin to better absorb the nourishing ingredients of your skincare routine. Opting for a cleanser enriched with organic Patchouli essential oil can be particularly beneficial. Patchouli oil boasts anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, helping to soothe and protect mature skin from environmental stressors. Its natural astringent properties also help to tighten and tone the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time.

          2. Apply a face oil

Using a Rose Geranium Face Oil can be a game-changer for skin in your 40s. This luxurious oil is packed with benefits that cater to the specific needs of mature skin. Rich in antioxidants, Rose Geranium oil helps to combat free radical damage, which can contribute to the visible signs of aging. Its hydrating properties deeply nourish the skin, restoring moisture and elasticity for a more plump and youthful complexion. Additionally, Rose Geranium oil has a balancing effect on the skin's natural oils, making it suitable for all skin types, including the combination and oily skin often experienced in your 40s. Its soothing aroma also offers aromatherapy benefits, promoting relaxation and reducing stress, which can further benefit your skin's overall health and appearance.

          Face Oil

          3. Moisturise

In your 40s, maintaining optimal skin hydration is essential, and using a Patchouli Light Cream can make a significant difference. This light yet nourishing cream is specifically formulated to address the unique needs of mature skin. Patchouli oil offers a myriad of benefits, including its ability to soothe inflammation, promote cell regeneration, and balance oil production. These properties make it particularly effective in addressing common concerns of aging skin, such as dryness, fine lines, and loss of elasticity. The lightweight texture of the cream ensures that it absorbs quickly into the skin without feeling heavy or greasy, leaving your skin feeling soft, supple, and deeply moisturised.

          4. Sun protection

A little sun can indeed be beneficial for your skin, as it provides vitamin D and a natural glow. However, it's crucial to be mindful of exposure time. Limiting sun exposure to no more than 20 minutes at a time can help prevent skin damage. If extended time outdoors is unavoidable, choosing an organic SPF sunscreen offers effective protection while minimising exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. Additionally, many natural SPF formulations are infused with antioxidants, vitamins, and hydrating botanicals that nourish and replenish the skin while defending against environmental damage.

When we dive into skincare routines for those of us hitting the fabulous 40s and beyond, let's remember it's not just about the face! Don't forget about your neck, chest, and those hardworking hands! They need some love too!

          PM Routine:

          1. Cleanse

Cleansing at night is crucial for maintaining healthy skin at any age, as it removes dirt, pollutants, and excess oils accumulated throughout the day. Opting for an organic cleanser minimises exposure to harsh chemicals, supporting both skin health and environmental sustainability. Our Patchouli Soap Bar, with its higher concentration of essential oils compared to liquid washes, provides a more nourishing and thorough cleanse, leaving the skin deeply refreshed. The natural antibacterial properties of patchouli help reduce blemishes and hormonal breakouts, promoting clearer, healthier skin.

          2. Apply a face oil

Follow up with a Rose Geranium Face Oil as described above.

          3. Moisturise

Rose Geranium Rich Cream is a great choice for skin in your forties. Packed with nourishing ingredients and the rejuvenating properties this cream offers targeted care for mature skin. Its hydrating formula helps combat the natural decrease in moisture retention that occurs with age, keeping the skin plump and supple. Additionally, Rose Geranium is known for its ability to balance hormones and sebum production, making it ideal for those experiencing hormonal changes common in this age group. Regular use of this cream can help minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while promoting a radiant complexion.

Remember everyone's skin is different. This is a general skincare routine for mature skin that would best suite someone with dry / combination skin.

For oily or acne prone skin you may want to mousturise less often with a light cream only, if you find a rich cream to heavy for you, or leave it out completely if the face oil is giving you adequate hydration. Don't skip cleansing as it not only removes dirt and pollutants but also removes excess oil and help balance your sebum levels. Keep sun screen application to a minimum by shielding your face with a hat and limiting the time you spend in the sun.

This pack includes a moisturising cleanser bar and cream, suitable for both your morning and evening routines. Lifestyle Factors for Healthy Skin in your 40s

            Diet and Nutrition:

In your forties, maintaining skin health extends beyond skincare products to include diet and nutrition. The impact of diet on skin health becomes increasingly significant during this stage of life. Consuming a diet rich in antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, helps protect the skin from oxidative stress and free radical damage, ultimately supporting a youthful complexion. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day is crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and promoting a radiant, hydrated appearance. Incorporating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like fatty fish and nuts, can also help nourish the skin from within, contributing to a healthy and vibrant complexion.

            Stress Management:

In your forties, the connection between stress and skin health becomes increasingly apparent. Chronic stress can wreak havoc on the skin, leading to various issues such as increased inflammation, breakouts, and exacerbation of existing skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Managing stress effectively is therefore essential for promoting overall well-being and maintaining healthy skin. Techniques such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, and regular physical activity can help reduce stress levels and promote a sense of calm and relaxation.

            Importance of Sleep:

Adequate sleep plays a crucial role in skin regeneration and rejuvenation, as it allows the body to repair and replenish itself. During sleep, the body produces growth hormones that stimulate cell turnover and collagen synthesis, essential for maintaining youthful and healthy skin. Lack of sleep can lead to increased stress hormone levels, which can result in inflammation, breakouts, and accelerated aging. To improve sleep quality, establish a consistent bedtime routine, create a relaxing sleep environment, limit screen time before bed, and practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation. Additionally, taking a lavender oil bath about an hour before bedtime and putting a few drops of lavender essential oil next to your pillow can aid sleep by promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety, helping you to drift off more easily into a restorative slumber. Avoid caffeine after 3pm and heavy meals close to bedtime, and aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night to support optimal skin health and overall well-being.

Remember, consistency is key, so prioritise self-care and make skincare a daily ritual to enjoy the benefits of healthy, glowing skin in your 40s and beyond.

Through it all, I've come to realise that skincare isn't just about looking good – it's about feeling good, inside and out. It's about embracing the journey of aging with grace and confidence, knowing that true beauty comes from within.
