Prevented Ocean Plastic - How it works?

Prevented Ocean Plastic - How it works?

The Prevented Ocean Plastic Programme prevents over 1000 tonnes of plastic from entering the ocean every month, and has so far prevented over one billion plastic bottles from reaching the water.[1]

Ocean plastic pollution is a pressing environmental issue, with millions of tons of plastic waste entering our oceans annually. This pollution harms marine life, disrupts ecosystems, and poses risks to human health. Addressing this challenge requires innovative solutions, and one such initiative making significant strides is Prevented Ocean Plastic.

This is why we at New Dawn Organic Skin and Hair Care decided to come on board, aligning our commitment to sustainability with meaningful action. By supporting initiatives that reduce plastic waste and incorporating eco-friendly packaging into our products, we strive to protect the planet while offering natural, organic skincare solutions made from sustainably farmed ingredients.

What is Prevented Ocean Plastic?

Prevented Ocean Plastic is a high-quality, certified 100% recycled plastic made from discarded bottles collected from coastal areas at risk of ocean pollution. This initiative focuses on intercepting plastic waste before it reaches the ocean, ensuring it is recycled and repurposed into new products. The program emphasises traceability, meeting regulatory health and safety standards, and can be identified by its distinctive triangular blue logo. [2]

The Mission Behind Prevented Ocean Plastic

The core mission of Prevented Ocean Plastic is to reduce ocean-bound plastic by creating sustainable recycling systems in vulnerable coastal regions. By developing customised sorting and collection infrastructure in underserved communities worldwide, the initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also provides employment  for local populations. [3]

Global Impact and Recognition

Prevented Ocean Plastic has garnered global recognition, partnering with renowned brands and organisations committed to sustainability. Collaborations include partnerships with Lidl, Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Lush, Patagonia, New Dawn Organic Skin and Hair Care and the NHS, amongst others. These collaborations highlight the initiative's credibility and the growing demand for sustainable materials in various industries.

The Process: From Collection to Product Integration

1.      Collection: Plastic bottles are gathered from coastal areas at risk of pollution, focusing on regions lacking adequate waste management systems.

2.      Sorting and Cleaning: Collected plastics are meticulously sorted and cleaned to ensure they meet high-quality standards for recycling.

3.      Recycling: The cleaned plastics are processed into recycled material suitable for manufacturing new products.

4.      Product Integration: The recycled plastic is then used by various brands to create products ranging from packaging to consumer goods, promoting a circular economy.

The Importance of Traceability and Certification

A key feature of Prevented Ocean Plastic is its commitment to traceability. Each batch of recycled plastic is fully traceable back to its source, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the supply chain. This traceability is crucial for brands and consumers aiming to make environmentally responsible choices. [4]
