How to use Essential Oils for Meditation
Looking to enhance your meditation practice with essential oils?
Meditating doesn’t have to be fancy, just find a quiet clutter free place, get comfortable, and close your eyes. While this may sound simple, truly relaxing and quieting your mind can be challenging. For me, just 15-20 minutes, right at the start of my day, using organic essential oils and a detox playlist works so well that the thought of it gets me up and out of bed looking forward to my day. The right essential oils are very important to me, creating a calming atmosphere, deepening my breath, and improving my focus.
In this guide, we’ll explore the best essential oils for meditation and how to use them for a more peaceful and mindful experience.
What essential oils are good for meditation?
There are many essential oils that are great for meditation, and it can be daunting choosing the right one, so here are some of my favourites to get you started.
Lavender: If you're new to essential oils for meditation then organic Lavender essential oil is a good place to start. With it's sweet, floral notes, it's always been a herbalist's ‘go to’ as it's one of the most therapeutic essential oils, and can help stabilise you if you're having a restless meditation session. If you don't usually like the scent of Lavender you could be pleasantly surprised by the fresh scent of our Organic Lavender Oil.
Ylang Ylang: If the beautifully exotic aroma of organic Ylang Ylang essential oil doesn’t calm your mind and awaken your senses, I'm not sure what will. Known for its uplifting properties, Ylang Ylang has long been cherished as a natural remedy, drawing in those seeking a revitalising boost.
Peppermint: The crisp, invigorating scent of organic Peppermint essential oil will refresh your mind and sharpen your focus. An aroma often associated with clarity and revitalisation. Known for its naturally uplifting properties, Peppermint has long been used to enhance concentration, and promote deep, mindful breathing. Whether you’re seeking a burst of energy or a sense of calm alertness, inhaling its refreshing scent can help you feel present and focused during your meditation practice.
Patchouli: Organic Patchouli essential oil, with its rich, earthy, and slightly sweet aroma, is a powerful aid in meditation, helping to ground the mind and create a sense of inner peace. Known for its balancing properties, patchouli oil helps stabilise emotions, easing anxiety and restlessness while promoting a sense of harmony. By fostering a calm yet alert state of mind, this aromatic oil enhances meditation practices, making it easier to achieve clarity, mindfulness, and emotional equilibrium.
Lemongrass: Organic Lemongrass essential oil, has a bright, citrusy, and slightly herbal aroma, it's an excellent companion for meditation, bringing a sense of freshness and clarity to the mind, helping you stay present and open during meditation. Its uplifting scent helps clear mental fog, allowing for greater focus and awareness during practice. Lemongrass is a cheerful, lighthearted oil that serves to remind us to keep things in perspective and not take them too seriously, making it especially helpful for those who struggle with overthinking or stress.
Rose Geranium: The delicate, floral aroma of organic Rose Geranium essential oil brings a sense of balance and tranquility to the mind. A scent often linked to emotional harmony and inner peace, it gently soothes stress and promotes a deep state of relaxation. Known for its grounding yet uplifting properties, Rose Geranium has been cherished for its ability to calm the nervous system and encourage mindfulness.
Not all oils are created equal, choosing organic essential oils ensures purity, quality, and a toxin-free experience.
How to meditate with essential oils
There are many ways to meditate using essential oils, but one of the easiest, and my favourite by far, is to use a diffuser. A diffuser transforms your favourite essential oil into a fine mist, gently dispersing it throughout your space. Adding a few drops to the water in your diffuser before meditating creates a soothing aroma that enhances relaxation without being overwhelming.

Alternatively, you can apply a diluted blend of essential oil into the palm of your hand (I use a matching Light Cream), rub your palms together, cup them over your nose and inhale before meditation or place it on your temples. Inhaling the calming fragrance, helps you ease into a peaceful state and connect with your inner world.
Whether you seek tranquility, emotional balance, or a renewed sense of perspective, essential oils can serve as powerful tools to support your practice. Embracing organic essential oils in your routine can lead to a happy, more fulfilling meditation, making meditation the favourite part of your day.
