Natural Homemade Wet Wipes
When my newborn son developed nappy rash, I realised the shop-bought wet wipes were making it worse by irritating his delicate skin. I wanted something gentler with no harsh chemicals, so I started researching how to make my own. After a bit of trial and error, I found a natural solution that really worked! Now, I’m excited to share it with other parents who want to keep their babies’ skin soft, soothed, and happy too.
How to make homemade wet wipes?
What you'll need:
- 1 roll of heavy duty paper towels (cheap paper towels do not work for wipes)
- Air tight glass or plastic container
DIY Wet Wipes Solution
Ingredients:
- 450ml Boiled water (let it cool a little)
- 1 tablespoon natural organic baby wash (not too soapy)
- 1 tablespoon fractionated coconut oil
- 6 drops organic tea tree oil (antibacterial and prevents mildew)
Instructions:
- Use a sharp serrated knife, to cut the roll of paper towels in half. A bread knife works best.
- In a bowl, combine hot water, baby wash, and fractionated coconut oil. Stir well.
- Slowly pour in the remainder of the water and mix in 6 drops of organic tea tree oil.
- Stir thoroughly, ensuring the solution is well blended.
- Pop one half of your paper towel roll into your container.
- Gradually add the mixture to your container, being careful not to oversaturate the paper towels.
- Remove the cardboard inner tube.
- Pull out a piece of paper towel from the middle.
- If any liquid remains, transfer it to a small spray bottle. Use it to re-wet wipes if they dry out.
Why should you make your own wet wipes?
Shop-bought wet wipes often contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to your baby’s skin. One chemical, called MI, can make the skin red, itchy, and sore. Some wipes also have strong smells and other ingredients that can make rashes worse. Doctors found that many babies get skin problems from these wipes! [1]
We mustn't forget the environmental impact of shop-bought wet wipes. Many contain plastic fibres that don't break down easily, contributing to pollution and clogged sewage systems. Making your own wipes with biodegradable materials and natural ingredients, is not only better for your baby's skin but can also help reduce waste and lessen your environmental footprint.
I hope you've found this blog useful and have fun making your own DIY wet wipes.
